This season, with my loyal little sidekick Otis at my heels, I grew 78 rare heirloom tomato varieties on my friend Bob Eggleston’s farm. Among them were Godzilla, Zapotec, Thunder Mountain, Paul Robeson, Crushed Heart, Blood Moon and Tim’s Black Ruffles—not to mention Dean’s Chocolate Salty Balls, a name that makes one wonder whether the tomato or the gardener has the better sense of humor.

For 25 wonderful years, I have collected and carefully saved these remarkable seeds. Each winter, I start my little beauties wherever I can find room—on windowsills, tabletops and nearly every other available surface—while happily planning the next season’s tomato patch.

I have always treasured the photographs I’ve taken of each harvest, but this year I invited my talented friend Max, @bigphotographysyr, to add her artistic eye and imagination. We spent a fabulous day at @thekesterhomestead arranging tomatoes, creating beautiful scenes and attempting to maintain order. Otis, meanwhile, devoted himself to a far more important task: reminding the resident chickens that he—not they—was king of the roost. Good boy, Otis.

The seeds from this year’s harvest will soon be counted by hand and tucked into little kraft-paper envelopes, each finished with a Luxury From The Farm label I designed. They will be available for you to plant and enjoy in a special tomato patch of your own next season.

As the garden settles in for its winter rest, I return to my studio to create ceramic vessels for my organic candles, along with one-of-a-kind bowls, platters, large planters and my favorite little martini cups—because a successful day in the garden deserves a proper cocktail.
